UMaine educator says state needs more engineers

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — A University of Maine engineering educator says a shortage of engineers could cost the state jobs.

UMaine Dean of Engineering Dana Humphrey says that at the rate the state is graduating engineers, it won’t be possible to maintain the current work force. And that could cause companies to move out of Maine to seek better educated employees.

Humphrey tells the Portland Press Herald the number of engineering students in the state is at a record low level.

He says universities need financial assistance to meet the demand.
