SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — A problem with the Casco Bay Bridge caused a commuter nightmare for motorists trying to travel between Portland and South Portland.

Officials say the drawbridge failed to lower properly at about 4 p.m. Thursday after a ship passed underneath. Cars quickly backed up on the bridge at the height of rush hour.

Traffic from Portland to South Portland was restored but traffic from South Portland to Portland was stopped for more than an hour and a half, until the drawbridge was fixed.
