Buxton woman sues over son’s death in Cumberland County jail

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine – A Maine woman is suing the Cumberland County jail and others for failing to properly treat her son before he was found dead in a cell in the jail’s medical unit.

Katherine Cady of Buxton claims the jail’s medical staff failed to protect her son, 26-year-old Paul Victor Galambos III, as he battered himself against the floors, walls and toilet of his cell over three days.

The federal lawsuit says Galambos was hospitalized with broken bones, bruises, head injuries and excessive fluid around one lung. Galambos died in a jail cell from blood clots that developed as a result of his injuries.

His Dec. 12, 2008, death was ruled a suicide.

The head of the jail’s medical provider tells the Portland Press Herald she couldn’t comment.
