PORTLAND, Maine — There will be no ferry service this year between Portland, Maine, and the Canadian city of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.
The Yarmouth Area Industrial Commission says five prospective ferry operators didn’t have the financial backing needed to run the ferry this year. The commission still hopes ferry service can be resumed in 2012.
The names of the five prospective ferry operators were not released. A sixth interested party, Scotia Cruises, says it’s ready to provide ferry service next year.
Ferry service between Portland and Yarmouth ended in 2009.
Portland Mayor Nicholas Mavadones Jr. told the Portland Press Herald the ferry service is needed, especially by the commercial trucking industry, which now makes long drives to the Maritime Provinces with seafood and other products.
