Real Maine Weddings announced Tuesday that a lucky couple, voted on by the public, will win a $100,000 all-inclusive wedding package for an October ceremony and reception in Freeport.

To enter the contest, each engaged couple must submit a two-minute video titled “Why I want to Be Married in Freeport USA,” which will be put on YouTube for public voting. Registration runs through March 15.

“The video is about why they should win, what getting married in Maine means to them and why people should vote for them,” said Real Maine Weddings Editor Melanie Brooks. “We’re anticipating to get quite a few couples who’d like to win a 100,000 wedding.”

Applicants can be residents of any state.

Three finalists will be selected from all eligible entries based on creativity, personality and enthusiasm. Online voting to select a winner from among the finalists will take place from March 21 through April 1. Taking into account the voting results, a panel of judges, including Brooks and Joan Montgomery, owner of the Maine Wedding Association, will make the final decision.

“We’re looking for creative couples, couples with a great personality, couples who are excited about winning this,” said Brooks.

In exchange for an all-inclusive wedding package, the winning couple must commit to be legally married on Oct. 21 at the Harraseeket Inn in Freeport or be responsible for all aspects of the ceremony if they choose to have it elsewhere.

“Once we find out the winning bride and groom, we introduce them to Amber Small from Sweetest Thing Weddings [of Bangor], and she’s going to take over from there in helping them decide what they’d like,” said Brooks.

Though the couple will work closely with wedding designers, the public will be involved in the wedding every step of the way.

Akin to media coverage of couples on reality TV shows such as “Rock the Reception” and “Wedding SOS,” the couple will be in the public eye, available for interviews and willing to make appearances with various media outlets.

The couple must agree to accept any decision made by Real Maine Weddings and website users when it comes to significant elements of the wedding such as selecting the cake, wedding rings, flowers, music and the honeymoon itinerary. For example, the bride will select three wedding gowns and the public will vote on which gown she will wear on the big day.

The wedding ceremony itself will not be a public decision.

“Couples can have any type of ceremony they want whether Jewish or Hindu or Catholic,” Brooks said.

All aspects of the wedding have been donated by various businesses, many in the Freeport area. Salon Freeport & Day Spa of Freeport will be do hair and makeup while European Bakery Inc. & Tea Room of Falmouth will bake the wedding cake.

This is a pilot contest for Real Maine Weddings, and a full story of the wedding will be featured in their 2012 issue.

“We’re looking next year and the year after to do this in other parts of Maine,” Brooks said. “We are trying to get as many vendors from the Freeport area involved as humanly possible. Going forward, if we do it again in Bethel, Portland and Kennebunk, we’re going to make it as local as possible.”

If couples don’t have the capability to make a quick video, a professional videographer will be at the Real Maine Weddings booth at several upcoming Maine bridal shows to work with couples and help them register for the contest.

The winner will be announced at the Freeport Maine Wedding Association bridal show at the Harraseeket Inn on April 3.
