Sugarloaf hopes to get damaged lift back up this season

The Associated Press

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine — Maine’s Sugarloaf ski resort says <a href="“>the chair lift that derailed last week remains shut down, but the goal is to get it back up and running this season.

Spokesman Ethan Austin said Monday there’s no specific timetable for restoring service on the East Spillway lift, one of four that reach the mountain’s higher elevation.

East Spillway was damaged when a cable lefts its track, causing five chairs to plunge 25 to 30 feet on Dec. 28. Eight skiers were taken to hospitals, but all have since been released.

Austin says parts have been ordered for the necessary repairs, while the investigation continues. The ski resort eventually hopes to replace the lift, possibly as soon as this summer. But Austin said he can’t comment on when that will happen.
