Aiden Matthew Willis, born at 11:08 a.m. Saturday, was the first baby of 2011 born at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. The boy was an early birthday gift for his mother, Lynn Duprey, 22, of East Millinocket who will turn 23 on Jan. 17.

“Having him on New Year’s Day was a surprise,” Duprey said Sunday as she held and rocked her son. “My due date was Jan. 5.”

Duprey said Aiden, who has brown hair and blue eyes, looks more like her side of the family than relatives of his father, James Willis, 25, of Medway.

Mother and son were scheduled to leave the hospital Monday.

About 3½ hours later, the first baby of 2011 in Aroostook County was born at 2:38 p.m. at Cary Medical Center in Caribou. As of late Sunday afternoon, he had not been named, according to Bill Flagg, director of community relations and development.

The boy weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces and was 21½ inches long. His parents are Nicole and Mark Carpenter of Perth-Andover, New Brunswick. He is the couple’s first child, Flagg said Sunday.

Maternal grandparents are Debbie and Butch Beaulieu of Presque Isle, and paternal grandparents are Rosanne and Ralph Carpenter of Woodstock, New Brunswick.

Flagg said it had been nine years since the first baby of the New Year in Aroostook County was born at the Caribou hospital.

The state’s first baby of the year was Dominic John Langelier, born at 12:16 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 1, to Elizabeth Langelier of Auburn and dad Leon Payne at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, the Lewiston Sun Journal reported.
