Waterville woman dies in early morning apartment fire

WATERVILLE, Maine — The State Fire Marshal’s Office says a Waterville woman died early Saturday morning when fire swept through her apartment on Silver Place.

Firefighters were called to the four-unit apartment house about 2:30 a.m. and found the first floor apartment, where the blaze began, filled with smoke and fire. When firefighters entered the apartment they found the body of 55-year-old Janet York in her bed. Five other occupants of the building escaped without injury and investigators say the building’s smoke detectors were working.

Fire investigators say the fire started in a trash can in York’s living room and suspect that the disposal of smoking materials in the trash is the likely cause of the fire. The apartment was heavily damaged by fire and smoke and there was water and smoke damage elsewhere in the building.

York lived in the apartment with a roommate who was at work when the fire broke out.

Waterville police and fire departments assisted the three fire investigators.

The fatal fire was the first in the new year and came only hours after the state ended its safest year in history, recording only nine deaths due to fires.
