OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine — Hundreds of hardy Mainers are greeting the new year by braving the frigid ocean waters off Old Orchard Beach for the 23nd annual Lobster Dip fundraiser to benefit Special Olympics Maine.

The Lobster Dip is Maine’s original cold-water fundraiser, started by the Portland Rugby Club 23 years ago in Portland with about 15 people.

It is now held each New Year’s Day in Old Orchard Beach. More than 300 people participated last year, bringing in more than $70,000.

This year, the event also is holding a “chicken lobster dip” — for those who are too chicken to go into the icy ocean but still want to raise money.
