JONESPORT, Maine — Robert Leighton, 26, of Jonesport was arrested Saturday morning after an incident in which police say he assaulted a local woman, smashed the windows out of her car and then hid from police.

It was the second time in just over two weeks that Leighton has been charged with domestic assault on the same victim, Maine State Trooper Michael Southard said Saturday.

Southard said that a witness reported to police that the assault was occurring, and when Southard responded he discovered Leighton hiding in a back bedroom of the victim’s home. Alcohol was definitely involved in the incident, Southard said.

Leighton, who is being held without bail pending a hearing before a judge on Monday, was charged with domestic assault, domestic violence with criminal threatening, violations of conditions of release, criminal mischief and resisting arrest.
