Bangor police announce Downtown Countdown street closures, parking changes

BANGOR, Maine — The Bangor Police Department announces traffic and parking changes to accommodate Friday’s Downtown Countdown New Year’s Eve festivities.

Broad Street, which runs along West Market Square, will be closed to parking and traffic as of 3 p.m. Friday and will remain closed until about 10 a.m. Saturday, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Thursday in a news release.

In addition, the section of Main Street that runs from State Street to Water Street will close at 11 p.m. It will reopen after revelers have cleared out of the area, Edwards said.

Edwards noted that events and activities will be taking place at more than a dozen venues in and around the downtown area, including West Market Square, where there will be s’mores-making over “campfires” staffed by city firefighters and the midnight ball drop from the roof of the Paddy Murphy’s Pub building.

Edwards also noted that the teen dance originally scheduled for the Hammond Street Congregational Church has been moved to West Market Square.
