FREEPORT – Beverly Russell Oakes, daughter of Virginia Isobel Cluff and Robert Henry Russell, died Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, at her residence, from an illness of cancer. She was born Aug. 29, 1938, in Brewer, and was a longtime resident of Bangor. Beverly graduated from John Bapst Catholic High School in 1956. Beverly began teaching dance at age 13 with Thomas School of Dance, Bangor. She continued her career of teaching with Dorothy Mason School of Dance after relocating to South Freeport in 1968. In the 1980s, she was asked to return to Bangor to direct Thomas School of Dance after Mrs. Thomas’ retirement. Beverly was also proudly one of the original members of the “Thomosettes,” and a dancer with Maine State Ballet under the direction of its original founder, Polly L. Thomas. After her retirement in the dance field she became the co-owner and manager of The Wine Cellar, Freeport. Beverly enjoyed her family, playing bridge, boating, socializing, reading, crossword puzzles, knitting, needlepoint and RVing with her late husband, “Skip,” to warmer climates to visit close friends and family. “We had 10 wonderful years traveling, didn’t we Skip?” she would often say. Beverly was predeceased by her husband, Lorin Eugene Oakes; brother, Robert Edward Russell; and mother-in-law, Helen Oakes. She is survived by her son, Russell Eugene Oakes; daughter, Kelly Oakes Dent; grandchildren, Sarah Ann Oakes, Ryan Eugene Oakes, Carmen Oakes Dent, William Scott Dent and Lorin Russell Dent; great-grandson, Christopher Jonelle Oakes; father-in-law, Carroll Oakes; brother-in-law, Dana Oakes; sister-in-law, Carol Anne Pellitier; stepbrothers, Michael and Thomas Torrey; stepsister, Diane Soldati; various nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog, Calvin. Relatives and friends are invited to an hour of visitation beginning 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, at Independent Death Care, 660 Brighton Ave., Portland, where a service in celebration of her life will begin 7 p.m. A graveside service for Beverly and her husband, Lorin, will be held in June 2011, the time to be published in the Portland and Bangor papers.
