BREWER, Maine — The Brewer Housing Authority created a scholarship fund in honor of the late Gerald “Gerry” Robertson, who dedicated much of his long life to serving the community, and on Tuesday gave the Brewer Children’s Fund a donation in his name.

When Robertson passed away two years ago, the housing authority’s board looked for a way to honor his service, Gordan Stitham, the housing authority’s executive director, said Tuesday.

“He was into education and we wanted to help the kids,” Stitham said, referring to the decision to assist the children’s fund, which has existed for many years.

Robertson died Dec. 29, 2008, at age 90 after serving the community for more than six decades. He was born in Sullivan and moved to Brewer as a teenager and was elected to the City Council at age 23. He spent 46 years on the council, 19 as mayor.

At the time of his death, Robertson was a 12-year veteran member of the Brewer Planning Board and had sat on the Brewer Housing Authority board of directors since 1997.

The housing authority board donated $250 to the fund last year and on Tuesday gave another $250, Stitham said.

The Brewer Children’s Fund was started years ago to assist students in need. For the most part it is supported by teachers and staff at Brewer High School, Diane Caron, Brewer High’s financial secretary, said Tuesday.

“It’s used for basic necessities — eyeglasses, doctor’s appointments, medical needs — that sort of thing,” she said. “It’s to help students who fall through the cracks.”

This year, the fund has been used to purchase clothing and medical supplies for students, and groceries for them and their families, Caron said.

Ten people sit on the Brewer Children’s Fund committee and help determine where the money is spent, she said.
