What is the top story of the year?

From the passage of the Affordable Health Care Act to the Wikileaks saga, from the earthquake in Haiti to the BP Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill, dramatic and important news stories have played out in the last 12 months. What one story stands out

as the most important? And why?

Along with the four stories listed above, other possible developments to consider are the election of Republican Scott Brown for the Massachusetts Senate seat that had been held by Ted Kennedy; passage of the tough anti-immigration law in Arizona; the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling; the end of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy; the “Ground Zero Mosque” and Florida church planned burning of the Quran; and the implementation of full-body scanning and pat-downs at airports.
