NEWPORT, Maine — No one was injured early Monday morning when a big rig slid off the road and crashed into a home, though both the truck and the home sustained significant damage.
According to Newport Police Lt. Randy Wing, the tractor trailer was driving down Stetson Road at about 1:20 a.m. Monday when it lost control and slid off the right side of the road just after Stetson Road’s intersection with Old Bangor Road.
The truck collided with a 68 Stetson Road home owned by Stanley Fowler. The truck crashed into a sun room on the front of the residence, which also doubles as a bedroom. Nobody was in that room at the time, said Wing. The occupants of the home were in a back bedroom.
Wing attributed the accident to slippery road conditions caused by heavy snow at the time of the accident. The driver and owner of the 1997 Peterbilt was Ryan Leighton, 28, of Kenduskeag. There were no charges filed against Leighton, though Wing said the investigation into the accident continues.
Wing said Leighton’s trailer was fully loaded with bark.
