BANGOR, Maine — Video surveillance cameras at Walmart caught a woman allegedly stealing wrapped presents from a car in the parking lot last week, and police now are asking for the public’s help identifying the suspect.
One video camera caught the female suspect walking into the store at 6:23 p.m. Dec. 20 and another one shows her “entering the victim’s car and stealing the wrapped gifts from inside her car,” Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said in a Monday press release. The value of the gifts is more than $400, according to the release.
Bangor police released an image of the suspect taken from one of the videos on Monday morning and asked the public to help find her. Several people posted comments on the department’s Facebook page and others called the anonymous tip line, Edwards said Monday afternoon.
“We did get a name,” he said. “I think we have her identified, but we’re waiting to verify” the suspect’s identify before releasing it.
“We’ve got a couple tips from the tip line, and we’re hoping they’re right,” Edwards said.
Officer Kim Donnell went to Walmart on Stillwater Avenue on the evening of Dec. 20 and reviewed the store’s security videos. She and the store’s security personnel linked the female suspect in both videos.
“They backtracked” through the video evidence, Edwards said.
The suspect is described as a white female of average height with long, dark brown hair, Edwards said. She was seen in the videos wearing a purple coat with a plaid lining and dark pants. The video released by Bangor Police Department shows the woman pushing a shopping cart with a large purse.
The female victim told police that she believed she locked her car with the presents inside.
“She thought she did, but she didn’t,” Edwards said. “We try and tell people to lock their cars or put stuff in the trunk” whenever carrying items of value.
The stolen wrapped presents included jewelry, candles, soaps, creams and Pampered Chef items, the sergeant said.
Those with information about the investigation may call Officer Kim Donnell at the Bangor Police Department, 947-7385, ext. 95784. The department’s anonymous tip line may be reached by pressing extension 6.
