DEXTER, Maine — A Dexter man whose apartment house was being taken by the town for nonpayment of taxes was charged with arson Thursday in connection with a fire that destroyed the building earlier this month.

Henry Murdoch, 44, of St. Francis Street was arrested Thursday by Investigator Scott Richardson of the State Fire Marshal’s Office and Dexter police Officer Kevin Wintle. Murdoch was taken to Penobscot County Jail in Bangor and is expected to make his initial court appearance on the charge Monday in Bangor District Court.

Richardson said an investigation concluded that the fire was set intentionally using an ignitable liquid. He declined to be more specific on the findings.

Murdoch, who was at home during the Dec. 15 fire and suffered smoke inhalation, was treated at Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft and later transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. He was released two days later.

Richardson said Murdoch owned the building and that the fire began in the downstairs apartment where he lived.
