PORTLAND, Maine — Maine’s congressional delegation says the military commissary and exchange stores along the state’s midcoast are getting a reprieve.

Maine’s U.S. senators and representatives say the closure of the defense commissary in Topsham and the Navy exchange store in Brunswick have been delayed until at least late June.

The stores had been slated to close in March, about two months before the Brunswick Naval Air Station shuts down for good. But under a provision included in the national defense authorization bill passed by Congress on Wednesday, the stores will remain open at least six months and perhaps longer.

Maine’s congressional delegation has been working to keep the stores open on a permanent basis to serve the region’s active-duty and retired military personnel.
