RSU 20 extends superintendent contract 1 year

By Abigail Curtis, BDN Staff

BELFAST, Maine — The RSU 20 board of directors last week unanimously voted to extend the contract of Superintendent Bruce Mailloux for another year.

Jean Dube, chairwoman of the board of directors, said Tuesday that details of the contract still need to be negotiated.

The vote was unanimous, she said.

Mailloux, who was hired as superintendent in 2007, said the next year would be difficult because of financial challenges.

“What really makes it hard is that we’ve had three or four challenging years in a row,” he said. “Here we go again. There’s going to be a lot of hard decisions made, and we have to prioritize where district monies are going to be spent.”

On the positive side, he said, the district’s students “are being successful.”

“There’s good things going on in classrooms,” he said.

Mailloux’s new contract has the condition that he and the directors will set specific goals jointly and that he will be evaluated every three months to determine the progress on those goals.

“Quite frankly, we should have done it all along,” he said.

A year ago, 11 members of the 17-member school board voted to solicit applications for the position of superintendent, although it was then being held by Mailloux.

A month after that vote, more than 150 people came to a board meeting in January to ask members to reconsider the decision.

After listening to impassioned testimony and holding a two-hour executive session, the board of directors unanimously voted to extend Mailloux’s contract for one more year.
