MONTPELIER, Vt. — Vermont prosecutors say a contractor who was mistakenly overpaid by $462,000 and cashed the check anyway has been charged with grand larceny.
The city of Montpelier made the mistake in 2004, paying Scott Construction Co. $548,110 for a water line project when the company was actually owed only about $85,000.
City officials didn’t realize they’d made the mistake until 2006, and kept it quiet for almost three years in hopes of recovering some of the money from company president Daniel Scott.
The 62-year-old Scott, who repaid some of the money, was charged Thursday with grand larceny and two counts of false claims. He could face 20 years in prison if convicted. He’s been cited into Orleans County court in Newport on Jan. 25.
