WINDHAM, Maine — Police in Maine say a 17-year-old led officers on a car chase that began in Portland and reached speeds of more than 100 mph before the vehicle’s tires were deflated with a spike mat in Gorham.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to the Long Creek Youth Development Center in Portland after he was taken into custody at about 2:30 a.m. Monday.

The chase began in Portland shortly after 1:30 a.m. It continued through Westbrook and Windham before ending in Gorham.

Police say a passenger in the car was released to the custody of his parents.

The only charges that have been filed are eluding a police officer, but more are likely.

Windham Police Sgt. Peter Fulton tells the Portland Press Herald the driver had been consuming alcohol.
