AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine Gov. John Baldacci’s official portrait shows a photograph of his family in the background and a plaque with his father’s words, “What have you done for the people today?”

The portrait of the outgoing governor was unveiled Saturday at a ceremony in the State House Rotunda.

Baldacci selected Jean Pilk of Cape Elizabeth to paint the portrait. Her past commissions include former Secretary of Defense Colin Powell.

Pilk was one of 17 artists who sent in portfolios to the Maine Arts Commission for consideration.

It was the first time a portrait unveiling occurred while the sitting governor is still in office.

Paul LePage succeeds Baldacci as governor next month.
