PORTLAND, Maine — After looking at 17 proposals for bench designs, a committee in Portland is looking for more ideas for the benches that will be installed along the Maine city’s new Bayside Trail.
The Portland Public Art Committee is looking for more suggestions after reviewing ideas from 17 artists, none of which were good enough.
The plan is to create three to five benches along the trail for walkers, joggers and cyclists.
The committee has designated $48,000 for the bench project. Installation had been planned for next summer. That is now being delayed.
Committee Chairman Jack Soley tells the Portland Press Herald members felt most of the entries were too pedestrian. “Art should be something you feel passion for,” he said.
He says they want to do something people will be proud of 20 years down the road.
