Maine Huts and Trails full-service winter season begins

Posted Dec. 15, 2010, at 10:23 a.m.

Maine Huts and Trails’ winter season begins this weekend, snow or no snow. The huts go back into full-service providing breakfast, lunch and dinner beginning on Friday night Dec. 17.

Although the trails do have snow cover there is not enough to start the ski season. It looks as though folks will need to be patient for the next significant snowfall and rely on our hiking boots for the next few days. However, this is a good time to plan your trip to the huts and make your reservation by calling 877-634-8824.

As the winter full-service season gets underway, there are new facilities and programs being offered. Here are the highlights:

• New Grand Falls Hut — This will be the first winter season for the new hut at Grand Falls on the Dead River. This is the most remote hut and offers a real backcountry experience for skiers and snowshoers. Grand Falls sleeps 32 guests and offers 3 meals daily.

• New Trail and bridge across the Dead River – The groomed trail network has been expanded with an additional 13.5 miles with the trail from Flagstaff Lake Hut to Grand Falls hut. This spectacular trail follows the Dead River and ultimately crosses the river via the new 200-foot-long Chappell footbridge. This is a “must ski” trail this winter.

• New Season Pass — For the first time Maine Huts and Trails is offering a winter season pass which gives access to an unlimited number of short stays at any of the huts. The pass includes dinners and breakfasts along with the lodging and is $375 for adults and $199 for children.

• New Website and on-line Booking Engine –Thursday, Dec. 16, the new MH&T website will launch. The website will be easy to use and will feature a daily trail report and a 24/7 booking engine that will allow you to make a reservation online, anytime that you choose.
