DEXTER, Maine — The Penquis Journey House will host its first Holiday Tea and Open House 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 16. The event will launch the Support the Journey fundraising campaign to benefit the transitional housing program for pregnant and parenting young women and their children.

Located in Dexter, the Penquis Journey House provides a safe and nurturing home for up to four young women and six children at any given time. The young women served are 16-21 years of age and are homeless, at risk of homelessness or living in unsafe conditions.

“Many of our residents have endured abuse, poverty and health challenges,” said residential services director Denise Trafton. “They have lacked safety, stability and support. I have the opportunity firsthand to see them persevere in hopes of a better future for themselves and their children.”

The only home of its kind in the region, the Penquis Journey House has offered a home and support for pregnant and parenting young women for the past three years.

“We help young women and their children at a critical point in their life’s journey. We are looking for support from our community, area businesses, individuals and our neighbors to give these young families the best possible chance to build strong families and successful futures,” Trafton said. “The Support the Journey campaign will help our resident moms and their children be safe, healthy, and progress to self-sufficient, productive lives.”

All funds raised in the campaign will help to meet basic needs and provide essential services to the young women and children at the Penquis Journey House.

The Penquis Journey House Holiday Tea and Open House is open to the public. All guests will receive a homemade holiday ornament made by the residents and a guided tour, and have an opportunity to meet staff and residents.
