Stories we’re pursuing on Tuesday

We’re looking deeper into the fatal shooting of a Machias man in the Hancock County town of Eastbrook early Monday. Police are continuing to investigate the death of Nicholas Richards, who allegedly was shot by a homeowner who said he was lured out of his house by a woman accompanying Richards and then was attacked by the pair. The Maine Human Rights Commission may co-sponsor legislation banning school mascots offensive to Native Americans, such as the Nokomis Warriors, Skowhegan Indians and Wiscasset Redskins. We’ll get reactions from schools, lawmakers and tribal leaders. Reporter: Heather Steeves

A public hearing on proposed rules outlining qualifications attorneys must have to serve as court-appointed counsel is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday in Augusta. Some attorneys have expressed concern that the rules create a Catch 22 for new attorneys who can’t be appointed to represent defendants because they have no experience and can’t get the required experience needed to be appointed. Others have said it will make it more difficult for the indigent to get representation in rural counties where there already are too few attorneys willing to take court appointed criminal cases.
