Morning fire destroys garage in Plymouth

Posted Dec. 12, 2010, at 10:11 p.m.

A fire early Sunday morning destroyed a Plymouth garage but was brought under control by firefighters before spreading to an adjacent home.

The chief of the Plymouth Fire Department, George Dean, was the first to notice the blaze on a private lane off Ridge Road while driving to work after 6 a.m., according to Deputy Chief Arrin Farrar. Dean woke up the homeowners and then quickly called in the fire to Newport and Plymouth fire departments.

Newport crews were the first to arrive. Firefighters managed to contain the fire to the garage although some of the vinyl siding on the house melted, Newport Fire Chief Jeff Chretien said Sunday evening.

The garage was a total loss. A plow truck, tools and other items inside also were destroyed.

Sunday’s fire was one year to the date that crews from Plymouth and Newport went to the same location for a relatively minor chimney fire, Farrar and Chretien said.

The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office is expected to investigate the cause of Sunday’s fire.
