PORTLAND, Maine — The federal government is making >another $670 million in heating aid</a available to states.
The new funding announced Friday brings to $2.7 billion the amount made available since Oct. 1 under the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program.
Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, describes the program as a critical lifeline that “often serves as the only means to guarantee home heating in tough economic times.”
A couple of the largest recipients of Friday’s funding release were New York with $69 million, Illinois with $34 million and California with $29.6 million. In New England, Massachusetts received $25 million, Maine $7.2 million, New Hampshire $4.9 million and Vermont $3.3 million.
