TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Derek Jeter can admit it now: He was definitely getting steamed at the New York Yankees.
While Jeter tried to keep talks quiet and let the sides negotiate behind the scenes, the Yankees went public with suggestions his increasing age and decreased numbers should result in a pay cut.
Jeter said Tuesday that he got miffed after Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said the longtime star should explore other options. Jeter says he was “pretty angry” at that remark and let the Yankees know it.
All sides seemed happy after the Yankees and their All-Star shortstop announced a $51 million deal for three years.
