Two professional artists and six high school students living on Peaks Island have created a batch of 26 ornaments to adorn the Maine Christmas tree in President’s Park, near the White House. One of the ornaments will be selected for the national Christmas tree, which President Obama will light at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9.
The six students, who attend Portland High School and Waynflete School, teamed up with artists Cole Caswell and Jessica George, who have a studio on the island.
The ornaments represent living in Maine from the perspective of island youth.
Pieces of driftwood, shells, sand and other natural materials found on Peaks Island have been incorporated into the clear ornaments, according the Maine Arts Commission. The items seem to float, enveloped in 6-inch, clear plastic globes. Fishing net connects the bits of Maine to the D.C. tree.
