BURLINGTON, Vt. — Dawn Sullivan's shorthanded goal with nine seconds remaining lifted the University of Maine to a 3-2 Women's Hockey East Association victory over Vermont Friday night.
The teams will complete the weekend set at Gutterson Fieldhouse starting at 4 p.m. today.
The Black Bears (7-6-3 overall and 2-2-2 in WHEA play) opened the scoring during a 5-on-3 power play on a Jennie Gallo goal 5:18 into the game, but the Catamounts (1-8-8, 0-6-4) equalized late in the period on a power-play goal by Erin Wente.
Brittany Dougherty's power-play score early in the third period gave Maine a 2-1 edge, but Wente tied it again 45 seconds later on the game's only even-strength goal.
With Vermont on the power play late in the game, Maine pulled goalie Brittany Ott with 18 seconds remaining to even up the skaters.
Sullivan made the strategy pay off nine seconds later with an unassisted tally.
Vermont pulled its goalie, Roxanne Douville, to try to equalize again, but time ran out.
Ott finished with 29 saves for Maine on 31 shots, while Vermont's Douville stopped 20 of 23 shots.
Sullivan also picked up an assist, on Doughterty's goal, and Jordan Colliton, Kelly McDonald and Danielle Ward also had assists for the Black Bears.
