ELLSWORTH, Maine — A Tremont man accused of trying to hide 20 grams of heroin in his body on Thanksgiving Day was one of 27 people indicted Thursday by a Hancock County grand jury.
Robert A. Goodwin, 41, was indicted on four counts of aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs, illegal importation of scheduled drugs and criminal forfeiture. Because Goodwin has a prior drug trafficking conviction, the new aggravated trafficking charges are Class A felonies, each punishable by 30 years in prison and a fine of $50,000 or less, police have said.
Goodwin is accused of committing the offenses on separate occasions, once on Dec. 18, 2009, and once on Thanksgiving Day. Details about the alleged Dec. 18, 2009, incident, for which Goodwin is facing two aggravated trafficking charges, were not available late Friday afternoon.
According to Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, Goodwin was arrested Nov. 25 in Ellsworth as he allegedly was transporting heroin back to the Ellsworth area after having traveled out of state. Acting on information, police stopped Goodwin’s rental car and found three retail bags of heroin and $3,000 on Goodwin, police have said.
Police believed Goodwin had hidden more drugs in a body cavity and so obtained a search warrant in order to compel him to submit to an X-ray, according to police. The subsequent X-ray revealed a foreign object in Goodwin’s large intestine and, later that evening at Hancock County Jail, police recovered 20 grams of heroin from Goodwin, officials have said.
Also indicted Thursday was an Ellsworth man accused of being drunk when he drove a car into a motorcyclist on Route 1 in Hancock.
Patrick K. Bellis, 26, is accused of driving a 1994 Subaru west on the highway on July 4 when the Subaru crossed the centerline into the oncoming lane of traffic, police have said. The Subaru struck a 2005 Suzuki motorcycle operated by Andrew Leonard, 38, of New Gloucester. Leonard, who suffered serious injuries in the ac-cident, was flown by LifeFlight helicopter from the accident scene to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for treatment, police said.
Bellis was indicted on charges of aggravated criminal operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants, aggravated assault and reckless conduct.
An Ellsworth woman was indicted Thursday in connection with allegations that she stole more than $2,000 from her employer at the time.
Dawn A. Kennedy is accused of taking money that she was supposed to deposit at a local bank for KFC, Ellsworth police have said. Kennedy, who no longer works for KFC, allegedly stole two deposits totaling $2,357 on May 10 and on May 11, according to local police.
