PORTLAND, Maine — A Maine State Police trooper is facing criminal charges of witness tampering and unlawful sexual contact with a child.

Gregory Vrooman, 45, of Nobleboro was arrested at his home on Wednesday.

The 24-year state police veteran was later released on bail.

Maine Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland tells the Portland Press Herald Vrooman was placed on administrative leave. McCausland says he doesn’t know if it was with or without pay.

District Attorney Geoffrey Rushlau would not provide details of the charges against Vrooman.

If convicted, Vrooman could be sentenced to five years in prison on each charge.
