BELFAST, Maine — Police arrested a local man Monday night after they say he pointed a shotgun at them.

Joshua Gross, 36, of Belfast was charged with operating under the influence of intoxicants and reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon.

According to police reports, Gross had gone to see his girlfriend at her Penobscot Terrace home. The two apparently had a fight, said Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham of the Belfast Police Department, and Gross banged on her door and then left.

Witnesses called police to say they saw Gross drive away intoxicated, Cunningham said.

When Sgt. Walter Corey and Officer Dan Fitzpatrick went to Gross’ residence to investigate, they had a hard time navigating around the piles of things on his porch to get to his door, Cunningham said.

The two called to Gross from outside the home, and then, as they watched through a window, saw him pick up a pump-action shotgun.

“He worked the slide, sat down in the chair and then placed the butt of the shotgun between his feet,” Cunningham said.

After Corey again called to Gross through the window, Gross stood up, picked up the shotgun and held it against his knees in such a way that the barrel was pointed toward the officers, according to Cunningham.

“If it had gone off, the trajectory would have gone toward the chest and head of the officer,” the detective said. “Eventually, he put the gun down.”

After he put the gun down, Gross went outside where the officers charged him and confiscated his guns, Cunningham said.

The suspect’s blood-alcohol level tested at 0.13 percent, more than the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

He was taken to Waldo County Jail, where he remained Tuesday night.
