NAPLES, Maine — A 12-year-old boy here was rescued Sunday after he broke through the ice on Muddy River and became trapped in the freezing water.

The boy, Curtis Gerrish, was trying to run across the ice when he fell through in water up to his chest, according to Deborah Turcotte, spokeswoman for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. He was rescued by Jason Guy of Tewksbury, Mass., who used a canoe that was on the riverbank to retrieve the boy.
