Beef O’Brady’s serves free turkey dinners

BREWER, Maine — An estimated 100 people were treated to free turkey dinners at Beef O’Brady’s on Thanksgiving Day.

Though the Wilson Street restaurant was closed to the public, employees and other volunteers, including a family of five from Portland, showed up Thursday morning to prepare a traditional feast for area senior citizens, people in need and public safety officials — including firefighters, police officers, emergency medical workers and Homeland Security personnel — who turned up in uniform.

“We were humbled,” said Manager Andrew Kennedy, son of owners David and Susan Kennedy.

The free meals, which included turkey, all the traditional side dishes and dessert, were served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Kennedy said.

“We understand that times are tough,” Kennedy said, adding that Beef O’Brady’s decided to provide the free meals as a way of thanking its customers and giving back to the community, which he said has been so supportive of the restaurant.

“I was very pleased with our crew,” many of whom showed up to help on what otherwise would have been a day off, Kennedy said.

Kennedy said the family plans to make the Thanksgiving Day event a tradition.

“We hope to go a lot bigger next year,” he said.
