SOG multitool is a powerhouse

The solidly built SOG PowerAssist® EOD model S67 multitool features two power-assisted knife blades, one straight, one serrated (both very sharp) that can be used while the tool is closed — as compared to some multitools that require the tool handles to be opened to deploy blades. This allows the user easy access for serious cutting jobs.

Flip the case open and the Compound Leverage™ pliers unfold with mechanical smoothness. The gear-driven heavy duty jaws and wire cutters exert more pressure than other multitools, such as the Leatherman Core (my old standby), with less hand pressure, hence cutting and pinching are noticeably easier. Typical household wire is a snap to cut, insulation and all. There’s even a built-in crimper useful for wiring jobs. The two tools pretty much match up in profile and dimensions.

The S67 has four tool blades in one of its handles: a three-sided file; C4-Punch (that’s as in explosives), which also is useful as a marlin spike, tool scribe and glass breaker; a can opener-small screwdriver; and a 1/4-inch flat screwdriver blade. All lock open with what SOG calls patent pending Piano-Locks.

This tool weighs in at 9.3 ounces, which makes it lighter than the Leatherman Core at 10.3 ounces, but the Leatherman has a few more blades: an awl, a Phillips screw driver, a lanyard ring and three flat-head screwdrivers ( 5/16-inch, 1/4-inch and 1/8-inch).

Story continues below advertisement.

I found the SOG PowerAssist, with its ballistic nylon case, to be a handy companion during the month I’ve had it. My only nit-picks: the power assisted blades don’t snap fully open every time as advertised (but I’m sure with more use they’ll loosen up) and the serrated blade lock (the one that’s supposed to keep the blade from opening) doesn’t work. I’d like to see a spring assist to open the plier-cutter jaws thus making one-handed operation easier.
