Comment sought today on conservation efforts

NEWPORT, Maine — Conservation efforts in the Sebasticook River Watershed will be the focus of a midday public meeting today in Newport.

The Sebasticook Regional Land Trust and Maine Department of Agriculture will host a community meeting from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to solicit public comment on conservation efforts within the watershed. The meeting will be held in the Newport Cultural Center Community Room at 154 Main St.

In addition, the Maine Department of Agriculture is in the midst of rule-making for three new statewide farmland protection programs. Stephanie Gilbert of the department will be at today’s meeting to describe the programs and gather local farmers’ input.

The land trust is seeking public comment on locally important places and resources, including but not limited to agricultural corridors, habitat, water access and traditional recreation.
