PORTLAND, Maine — A Maine man is going to jail for three months for illegally selling guns to out of state residents.

At his sentencing Monday in federal court, Randy Goodwin of Acton said he was trying to earn extra money to support his five children and he didn’t know he was breaking the law.

But the guns he was selling were ending up in Massachusetts in the hands of convicted criminals.

Goodwin was arrested in March. He pleaded guilty in July.

Federal prosecutors have said Goodwin sold almost 100 handguns he had purchased in Maine between September 2009 and January to a Massachusetts man.

The Portland Press Herald reports that federal Judge D. Brock Hornby said in court that ignorance of the law was no excuse.
