WESTBROOK, Maine — Police here say a fight club discovered earlier this month has come to an end after organizers shut down the Facebook page that was promoting events and stopped organizing the contests.

“The good news is, several of the architects of the fight club and websites came to us voluntarily as a result of the media attention and volunteered to take the websites down,” Westbrook Police Chief William Baker told the Portland Press Herald.

The club attracted widespread attention after police arrested two 18-year-olds for prizefighting Nov. 8 after finding a group of spectators surrounding combatants. A few days later, police broke up a similar gathering and charged two 16-year-olds with disorderly conduct.
