MILBRIDGE – Gertrude “Trudy” Anna Sargeant Hurlbert passed away peacefully Nov. 14, 2010, surrounded by her family. Trudy was born Aug. 17, 1930, in New Haven, Conn., daughter of Charles and Mildred (Kerr) Sargeant. She attended school in Seymour and graduated from college in Connecticut with her teaching degree. Trudy married Waldo C. Hurlbert, Oct. 26, 1952, and taught school in Connecticut for 10 years. In 1970, Trudy and Waldo moved to Milbridge, where she taught at Harrington Elementary for a few years before transferring to Milbridge Elementary to teach second grade until her retirement June 5, 1990. She was predeceased by her husband, Waldo, in 1988; her only sister, Eunice; and two brothers, David and Charles. Trudy is survived by three brothers, Richard Sargeant, Earl and wife, Marie Sargeant, and Harry and wife, Elaine Sargeant, all of Connecticut; two sons, Waldo C. and wife, Brenda Hurlbert, and Wayne C. and wife, Teresa Hurlbert; five grandchildren, Melissa Hurlbert and Jerry Reid, Matthew and wife, Jill, Mark and wife, Sarah, Mandy and Dicky Wallace, and Wayne C. Hurlbert “L.W.”; two stepgrandchildren, Steven and Bert Pomeroy; and four great-grandsons, Matthew II and Mason Hurlbert, Mark II and Maddox Hurlbert. She really wanted a great-granddaughter. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, at Milbridge Congregational Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Trudy’s name to Milbridge Congregational Church.
