MMA women open with victory

CASTINE — Junior Sam Goda had 18 points, eight rebounds and was 8-for-8 from the field in leading Maine Maritime Academy to a season-opening 93-53 women’s basketball victory over the University of Maine-Presque Isle.

Maggie Smith scored 16 points and Brittany Hunt added 15 points for the Mariners. Casey McCloskey had seven assists and Courtney Dufour tallied four assists and three steals.

Rashell Saucier paced the Owls with 13 points and six rebounds. Megan Korhonen had 12 points and six rebounds while Taylor-Jo Quint added seven steals.

At Gorham, Kelley Paradis had 30 points, seven rebounds, six assists, four steals and three blocks in leading the University of New England of Biddeford to victory over the University of Southern Maine.

The Nor’easters outscored the Huskies 52-43 in the second half to grab the win.

Carrie Bunnell scored 17 points to UNE. Liz LeBlanc had 13 points and Margo Russell added 10 points, all on free throws.

Kaylie DeMillo led Southern Maine with 17 points. Renee Nicholas added 16 points and four steals. Lauren Rousseau scored 12 points and Kimberly Rivet tallied 10 points and five steals.

At Castine, Paul Campbell had 18 points, 12 rebounds and four assists as Maine Maritime Academy scored 47-second half points to defeat the University of Maine-Presque Isle in its opener.

Benn Russell scored 11 points for the Mariners and Dom Drake added 10 points.

Brad Task led the Owls with 14 points. Patrick Manifold had 11 points, 14 rebounds and five assists. Gerardo Vasquez scored 13 points and Clifford McDonald had 13 rebounds.
