BAR HARBOR, Maine — If you like to go to the races and fancy yourself a “bedding” man or woman, the eastern end of Cottage Street might be where you want to be sometime shortly after 10 a.m. this Saturday.

That’s when the local Chamber of Commerce will stage its Third Annual Bar Harbor Bed Races.

The races first were held in 2008 to augment the popular Early Bird and Pajama Sale, which got its start in 1995. For the sale, local businesses open their doors at 6 a.m. and offer discounts to any shoppers clad in sleepwear such as pajamas, robes or slippers. This year’s sale on Saturday, Nov. 20, will run from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and is expected to include more than three dozen local businesses.

At around 10 a.m., bed race participants will gather at the Village Green and then parade down Main Street to prepare for the races on Cottage Street. There, racers will have to push their wheeled beds down Cottage Street to Main Street and then back to the starting line.

The registration fee is $25 per team. Each team must have five members, four people to push the bed and one to ride on it. Participants must be 14 years old or older, and each team must have at least one member 18 years of age or older.

Teams will race individually against the clock with the four fastest teams advancing to the second round. The top two teams will win trophies with the first-place finisher winning $500 and second-fastest team winning $200.

Racing teams are encouraged to decorate their beds in a tasteful, family-friendly manner to compete for the “Best Decorated” title.

Heather Jones, director of events for the Chamber, said Monday that so far she has seven teams officially registered for the races and three more that have told her they plan to do so.

Entry forms and further information about the bed races can be found on the Chamber website, www.barharborinfo.com, or by calling 288-5103, ext. 112.
