HERMON, Maine — People who want their final resting place to be in Hermon now have that option.

During a special town meeting earlier this month, residents voted to use up to $85,000 in the town’s perpetual care-cemetery reserve account to buy land to expand Snow’s Corner Cemetery.

According to Town Manager Clinton Deschene, the land earmarked for the expansion comprises 21.1 acres adjacent to the existing cemetery.

Deschene said the land closest to the roadway would be developed first. The initial phase of development will include construction of a new entrance, likely during the next three years, he said.

Deschene said the town decided to expand its cemetery capacity because its existing cemeteries were near or at capacity.

Though it isn’t yet clear how many plots the more than 21 acres can accommodate, Deschene said the expansion would meet the town’s cemetery needs for long into the future.

He also said that obtaining the land for future burials was the product of five years of preparation, ranging from evaluating potential sites to negotiating and completing the purchase.
