Cheverus of Portland, Mountain Valley of Rumford and Yarmouth earned Western Maine football championships Saturday while Leavitt of Turner emerged as the Class B Eastern Maine champion in a 27-7 win over Gardiner.
Cheverus beat Deering of Portland 35-34 in Class A while Mountain Valley of Rumford shut out Wells 18-0 in Class B and Yarmouth topped Lisbon 14-12 in the Class C.
In Eastern Class B, Jordan Hersom scored two touchdowns and rushed for 222 yards to lead top-seeded Leavitt to victory over No. 3 Gardiner. The 11-0 Hornets earned their 23rd straight win and will play Mountain Valley for the state title.
In Western Class A, a missed 36-yard field goal by No. 3 Deering with 6.9 seconds remaining enabled No. 1 Cheverus (11-0) to hang on for a one-point victory and a trip to the state title game against Bangor. Evan Jendrasko scored two touchdowns to lead Cheverus.
In Western Class B, the Mountain Valley defense held No. 2 Wells to just 23 rushing yards and no points. The top-seeded Falcons (11-0) had three players rush for touchdowns.
In Western Class C, Brady Neujahr broke off a 65-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to help No. 1 Yarmouth (11-0) earn the win over No. 2 Lisbon and lead the Clippers to the state championship game against Stearns of Millinocket. Neujahr also had a 6-yard scoring pass to Nick Proscia, who kicked both extra points.
