MAXFIELD, Maine — A Massachusetts man who was hunting with two friends Saturday apparently died of natural causes while hiking in the woods.

James McMahon, a 72-year-old resident of Bridgewater, Mass., had agreed to meet one of his hunting partners, also from Massachusetts, back at their vehicle at 4:30 p.m., Maine State Trooper Christopher Foxworthy said Sunday.

McMahon was found by hunting companion David Ferrari, Foxworthy said.

“One of his friends found him dead on the side of the trail around 4 p.m.,” said Foxworthy. “The third member of the group went off in a different direction.”

Foxworthy said it’s unlikely there will be an autopsy.

“It would appear he died of natural causes and it’s likely his physician will be able to sign off on his death, knowing his medical health,” Foxworthy said. “I don’t think [McMahon] suffered.”
