BAILEYVILLE – Calvin Clarence Shain Sr., 81, passed away Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, at Atlantic Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, Calais. Calvin was born Feb. 25, 1929, in Baileyville, son of the late Clarence and Lydia (Sprague) Shain. He worked as a paper maker for 44 years, starting with St. Croix Paper Co., which was later sold to Georgia Pacific. Calvin served his country in the U.S. Navy as an aviation machinist, mostly stationed at the U.S. Naval Proving Ground in Virginia. He enjoyed woodworking and working as a carpenter in his spare time, wintering in Florida, hunting and fishing. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Jack and Donald Shain. Surviving are his loving wife of 59 years, Frances (Richards) Shain; two children, Calvin Shain Jr. of Baileyville and Vicki Shain of Princeton; two sisters, Joyce Shain of Florida and Betty Bedau and her husband, Ray, of Florida; two brothers, Barry Shain and his wife, Jean, of Florida and Ralph Shain; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bill and Ellen Richards of Connecticut and Rosalie and Dean Williams of Princeton; two grandchildren, Shain Phelps of Princeton and Shawn Phelps and his wife, Cindy, of Hermon; two great-grandchildren, Trent and Brayden Phelps; several nieces and nephews; his close friends, Jack Costello, Jack and Linda McLellan, and John Dray; and his best buddy in Florida, William Pares. At Calvin’s request, there will be no services.
