NEW PORTLAND, Maine — The Army says a Maine soldier killed in Afghanistan died of wounds suffered from small-arms fire when his unit came under attack.

The Army says 20-year-old Spc. Andrew Hutchins was killed Monday while on tower duty in Khost province in eastern Afghanistan near Pakistan.

Hutchins was from New Portland and a 2008 graduate of Carrabec High School in North Anson. He was serving as a military policeman assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Ky.
