A garage on Guptil Lane caught fire Tuesday morning, with the flames spreading to the nearby house before they could be contained. No one was injured, but the garage and one wall of the two-story house were lost. Fire officials were unsure what caused the fire, but Owls Head Fire Chief Frank Ross said later Tuesday that it likely was started by a charger plugged into a scooter or garden tractor. The fire started in the garage, Ross said, and spread to the house about three feet away. “The garage was a total loss, and the house is probably a total loss, too,” Ross said. The homeowners were home when the fire started and watched smoke rise from the building. Owls Head, South Thomaston and Rockland fire departments responded, as well as Rockland EMS and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. The house and garage were insured, Ross said.
