Should Democrats fight to let tax cuts for the rich expire?

The first big fight between the newly ascendant Republicans and Democrats in Congress will come over the Bush tax cuts. The tax cuts are scheduled to expire in December.

Before the election, Democrats said they wanted the cuts to expire for those households with incomes over $250,000, but they wanted to extend the lower rates for those earning less. Republicans want to extend cuts for both groups.

Is this a fight Democrats can – and should – win? Can Democrats remake themselves in the eyes of the American public as friends of the middle class? Or will they appear again like “tax spend liberals,” which is how the GOP labels them? What argument can you make to extend or end the tax cuts for the rich? printed on August 24, 2017
